Goldfield Mine Train
A view of Superstition Mountain, from the Goldfield Mine ($300)
Just east of Phoenix, AZ, at the western edge of the Superstition Mountain range, is a restoration of the old Goldfield Mine ghost town. Although the train ride around the town is not terribly exciting, the views are spectacular. On our first visit there, I saw this bend coming and knew I could get a shot that included the locomotive. Superstition Mountain as a backdrop was an extraordinary bonus! I applied my "digital darkroom" to enhance the texture of the mountain, and added three layers of detail, adding depth to the scene. The custom wood frame is walnut-stained poplar, with a blue-stained oak border inlay. The corner is decorated with an inlaid Saguaro cactus, in abalone pearl, with flanking mountain inlays hand formed from yellow brass.
